Abstract The transfer of Imam al-Riḍā (as) to Marv following his appointment as heir apparent placed him at the heart of a diverse multicultural environment. Within this historical context, and by the initiative of al-Ma’mun’s court, organized debate sessions were regularly convened between prominent representatives of various religions and theologians of diverse sects. The primary objective of this research is to identify the specific operational model and argumentative methodology underlying the Imam’s engagement with this religious diversity. While previous studies have often evaluated these sessions merely from a traditional theological perspective, the present article, utilizing a historical-analytical method based on a comparative reading of historical texts, focuses specifically on the structure and systematic logic of these dialogues. The primary research sources—specifically ʿUyūn Akhbār al-Riḍā, al-Tawḥīd, and al-Iḥtijāj—have been utilized with critical source-based scrutiny. The research findings indicate that these debates were grounded in a coherent operational model of “Jadal-e Ahsan” (better argumentation), the central feature of which is a “methodological gradation from Revelation to Reason.” This model consists of three fundamental components: rational reasoning coupled with a complete avoidance of takfir; compelling the interlocutor through their own sacred texts and accepted epistemological foundations; and maintaining the dignity of the opposing party throughout the debate. A comparative analysis of five landmark debates—with the Catholicos, the Exilarch, the Hirbadh, Imran al-Sabi, and Sulayman al-Marwazi—demonstrates the consistency, coherence, and dynamism of this operational model across vastly different situations. In this process, the Imam began the discourse from a point of textual commonality and, to avoid textual stalemates, elegantly elevated the level of the debate to pure rational proofs. Consequently, this article reconstructs the Riḍawi debates as a systematic historical model for interreligious dialogue.

Abstract The conduct and practices of the Infallibles, particularly Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha (PBUH), play a fundamental role in shaping the behavioral and verbal models for Shia Muslims. Examining the content of the debates and discourses of the Infallibles has a significant impact on intellectual growth, awareness, and the strengthening of the beliefs of the Muslim community. This can also serve as a basis for attracting people, including fair-minded opponents and audiences. This article, based on three key areas—principles, methods, and the style of the Infallibles’ debates, specifically those of Imam al-Ridha (PBUH)—employs a textual analysis approach. The study demonstrates how the sacred figures, particularly Imam al-Ridha (PBUH), engaged in debates, how they based their arguments on the foundations of Quranic verses and the Prophetic tradition, how they utilized rational reasoning, which of the three methods—proof, good admonition, or the best argument—they most frequently employed, and which rhetorical style they preferred. According to research conducted in the Kitab al-Hujjah section of Al-Kafi, particularly concerning the necessity of following the Divine Proof, Imam al-Ridha’s (PBUH) debates are ranked third after the debates of Imam al-Sadiq (PBUH) and Imam al-Baqir (PBUH).

Abstract Critical discourse, in fact, is considered the formative process of discourse analysis, in which, by going beyond the mere description of linguistic data, attention is paid to the effective processes in the formation of discourse. In this type of discourse analysis, two social and linguistic approaches are discussed. In the social approach, discourse is explained as situational context, and in the linguistic approach, textual context is explained. The debates of Imam Reza (a.s.) are full of political, religious and social themes, which Imam (a.s.) has eloquently expressed in the various conditions of the time, to inform and guide people towards truth and justice. This research has analyzed the linguistic and structural interaction of Razavi’s debates with the atmosphere that dominates the society and the thoughts of the interlocutors. The results of this research indicate that Imam (a.s.) was able to create a close bond between the culture ruling the society and the intellectual deviation of the audience by using styles and words compatible with the atmosphere of the debate. His Holiness (PBUH) used words that had a deep meaning and in order to highlight the concepts in question, they used different linguistic connotations. Sometimes, with the use of questioning, he has somehow questioned the beliefs of the other party and challenged and marginalized his speech.

The results of this research show that most of the selected articles include topics that deal with general principles in debates such as methodology, goals, foundations, educational axes of debate, free thinking in debate, etc. The most important components of Razavi's debate studies in the mentioned articles in terms of the general principles of debates include moral, scientific and technical principles. The distribution of studies shows that central, north and northeast, west and then south provinces have been more interested by researchers, which is more dependent on the universities where researchers study.

Abstract Debate with different scholars and scientists is one of the characteristics of the era of Imam Riḍā (as) that he answered their questions in different ways and citing sources accepted by both parties and proved the legitimacy of Islam or Shiite beliefs. One of the debates of that Imam is related to explaining the supreme virtue of Imam Ali (AS) in the verses of the Quran, in which the Imam, based on the verse of Mubāhilah (Āl-ʿImrān, 61), answered Maʾmūn's questions and forced him to submit to the correct argument. This study has analyzed it with the help of library sources and after reviewing various texts quoted from the debate between Maʾmūn and Imam Riḍā (as) about the verse of Mubahila, and it wants to answer these questions: in what sources is this debate mentioned and what is the most correct narration of it? What are the principles of the Imam in the debate and what theoretical and practical points can be obtained from the analysis of the text of the debate? The findings of the research show that Imam Ali ibn Mūsá al-Riḍā (as) in this debate, considering the continuous verbal evidence (words and words of the verse), continuous non-verbal evidence (historical story of Mubahila) and the use of prophetic narrations on the subject, expressed the greatest Qurʾanic virtue of Imam Ali (as) to be the soul of that Imam as the soul of the Prophet (pbuh) in the verse of Mubahila, and then he answered the doubts.

Abstract As a tradition with a special status in the Islamic culture, debate entails certain principles and basics which must be learnt and observed for being successful in this issue. These principles can be divided into two scientific and ethical classes: scientific principles refer to those skills and sciences with which a debater needs to be provided before starting a debate; as these skills and sciences may help him/her to embark on an effective and successful debate. However, being provided with merely the necessary knowledge and meeting the technical requirements are not enough to be successful in a debate; and the ethics also need to be respected by the debater for being able to affect the opposing party or presumably the audience.
This study has tried to elicit and analyze the most practical scientific and ethical principles used by Imam Ridha (AS) in his debates while acknowledging the necessity of observing the scientific and ethical principles in a debate and in response to the question that is there any suitable model to pursue in this regard?.
In this regard and with the aim of proposing a practical model, the most important principles that the eighth Shiite Imam (AS) used to observe comprising of three scientific principles, including using the best form of disputation, taking advantage of rational demonstration and avoiding fallacy, as well as three ethical principles, including treating people politely, avoiding criticizing people’s personality and avoiding militancy and prejudice, are explained here.

Abstract Among the methods for explanation of religious teachings in Ahl-el-Bayt’s school of thought against the mentality of opponents were the arguments and debates conducted by Imams and their trained students along the history. With a contemplating eye, this article seeks to answer the question “what are the most important principles for debates and open-mindedness from Imam Reza’s point of view?”. Results indicate that principles for debate include thorough knowledge regarding various religions and schools of thought, expression of rational principles and criteria, liberalism and a science-oriented nature that’s familiar with various sciences while the most important principles for open-mindedness include pure intention, respect for thinkers, scientific equity and avoiding issues such as hastily judgment, myth-orientation and cult of personality, neo-phobia and neo-philia, foreignism and self-inferiority, partisan and factional interests and attachment to political governance. These functional principles can set a pattern for conducting a sound and ethics-oriented debate among thinkers from various religions across the world. This way, it’s safe to say that open-mindedness will not lead to behaviors which eventually result in a decline in human values.
